Relocation Resources for the Winston-Salem Area

So, you've finally made the decision to move to Winston-Salem. Congratulations! This is a wonderful part of North Carolina, and a fantastic city to call home. As the fifth largest city in the state, Winston-Salem is home to a vibrant local community filled with art, culture, a strong economy, beautiful parks, and fun things to do.

While relocating can be intimidating, it's always worth it when you're moving to a place that's brimming with opportunities. We've compiled some complimentary resources to make the move to the Winston-Salem area as easy as possible for you. Ready to get started?

Before You Move

Have a Yard Sale

Go through all of your belongings and set aside any unused, outgrown, or unnecessary items. Consider hosting a yard sale to make some extra money for moving supplies, or simply donate your unneeded items to a local charity.

Pack One Room at a Time

Begin with a room that isn't used as often, and pack everything away in sturdy, reinforced boxes. Remember, if you collect boxes from the grocery or liquor store, these often aren't reinforced. Label all of your boxes by room.

Label Everything

Use a labeling or color coded system to organize everything you've packed. Either label each box with its corresponding room, or assign a color to each room and label your moving boxes accordingly. Knowing exactly where everything is will save you a headache on moving day.

On Moving Day

Create an Essentials Bag

In a large bag or box, carefully pack all the essentials you're going to need right away after you move in. Include personal toiletries, snacks, medication, cell phone chargers, a change of clothes (in case you're moving cross-country and end up at your new home before the moving truck), and any other materials you use every day. Keep this essentials bag with you at all time.

Keep Important Info Handy

Carefully record and keep handy all the important contact information you might need during the move. If you're using a team of movers, make sure you exchange contact information with the movers' foreman in case of emergencies. Store important numbers, family members, doctors, neighbors, etc., in your cell phone or on a piece of paper.

Other Moving Tips

  • Stock up on packing supplies at least a month before the move. You can pick up cardboard boxes from grocery stores or liquor stores in your town, but keep in mind that you will need to reinforce these yourself with packing tape.
  • If you have a lot of fragile items, stock up on bubble wrap or pack fragile items with articles of clothing or winter jackets.
  • Pack heavier items in smaller boxes to make them easier to carry.
  • On moving day, before you unpack anything, go through your home and do some deep-cleaning. This is easier to do first because you won't have to move objects out of the way!
