Winston-Salem Moving Tips

Making Your Relocation Easier

Are you getting ready to relocate? Whether you're moving across the city, the state, or the country, packing up and relocating can be a lot to handle. When it comes to a seamless relocation process, being prepared is the key to success! Kick off your Winston-Salem moving process by browsing our tips.

Have a few more questions? Fill out our relocation form, and we'll get you a personalized guide all about making the move to Winston-Salem.

Before You Move

It's never too early to start packing your house up! Take it slowly, working through one room at a time, and use a few of these pointers to keep things simple and stress-free.

Organize and declutter

You probably have some things around your house that you don't need to keep out all the time. Sort through each room, putting away decorations, furniture, or extra items that can get packed up right away.

Lighten the load

Make a little extra money and save yourself some time by selling a few of your unwanted items. Whether it's a yard sale or an online marketplace, there are plenty of options for lightening your load.

Change your address

You won't want to miss out on any important mail, bills, or packages, so be sure to put in a change of address request at your post office. It can take up to two weeks for requests to get processed, so give yourself plenty of time.

Handy Packing Tips

  • Reinforce: Make sure your packing boxes can hold a decent amount of weight, and wrap any delicate items in bubble wrap or spare clothing.
  • Innovate: Pack dishes, bowls, plates, and other glass objects vertically, rather than flat and stacked. For extra padding, pack glasses and stemware inside socks.
  • Pack small: Got a lot of heavy items? Split them up into smaller boxes to make carrying them easier.
  • Prevent leaks: Untwist your soaps, shampoos, and lotions, then wrap the tops with cling wrap, and twist the caps back on.
  • Prepare: You're going to want a few things—like toilet paper, chargers, towels, and sheets—right away, so create a box that you'll open first and put it near the top.
  • Label, label, label! Organize your boxes based on room in order to make the unpacking process easier—your future self will thank you!

On Moving Day

After weeks of packing things up, moving day is finally here! Here's what you should consider doing in order to make the day go as smoothly as possible.

Keep important info

Medication, financial records, ID, chargers—you'll want to keep a few things close to at all times during the move. Pack a backpack filled with a few essentials!

Take an overnight bag

You won't want to unpack everything the day you get in, especially if it's later than you expected. Grab a backpack and fill it with things like a change of clothes, toiletries, and anything else you might need.

Have phone numbers handy

If you're using professional movers, you'll want to have their number saved in your phone in case anything comes up.

After You Move

Clean first

Your house will probably not be this empty again for a long time, so take advantage of that exposed space! Scrub, vacuum, polish, and dust every corner before you move your stuff in.

Unpack by room

Remember how you packed everything up room-by-room? Do the same while you're unpacking, and it'll make the process feel much less overwhelming.

Enjoy your new home

The papers are signed, the packing is done, and now you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your new home!
